GREENBURGH (TOWN) ACTIVE COVID CASES: THE RIPPLE RECEDES & 131 COVID DEATHS AT GREENBURGH LOCATED ADULT CARE FACILITIES

After the second wave peaked with 978 townwide cases on Jan 20, numbers rapidly fell to 453 on Feb. 23, when a "ripple" started which crested with  571 cases on March 9.  Numbers have been falling since that date.

Westchester County (or is it New York State) still won't disclose COVID deaths by municipality within the county.  We know from the NY DOH website that 2152 Westchester residents have died of COVID an that 2328 are reported as having a "place of fatality" in Greenburgh.  I assume much of this gap reflects non-county residents' deaths in hospitals.   I don't know how the residency status of seniors in assisted living, nursing home and other adult care facilities are counted.   But we do know from DOH data how many residents of adult care facilities died in each town, with Greenburgh having 131 such COVID deaths as follows:

A:  COVID confirmed deaths at the facility
B:  COVID confirmed deaths out of the facility
C:  COVID presumed deaths at the facility

Considering the population proportion of the county living in Greenburgh (about 9.3%), it is probably a reasonable assumption that 131 COVID deaths in adult care facility constitute half or more of all townwide deaths.

GREENBURGH (TOWN) ACTIVE COVID CASES: A THIRD WAVE OR A RIPPLE?

Greenburgh's Second Wave peaked on inauguration day (cosmic coincidence?) and numbers declined rapidly (54%) over the following five weeks.  Since February 23, however, townwide numbers have started climbing: 23% increase through March 4.  What is going on here? A wave or a ripple?

One year into the pandemic,  deaths remain a mystery as the Cuomo and Latimer administrations are not (to my knowledge) releasing any intra-county geographical COVID fatality data.   Vaccination numbers have not been updated since my last post.

Who's Getting Vaccinated in Greenburgh? Breakdown by Zip Code

Using data provided by Westchester County, we can get some sense of disparities in receiving shots in Greenburgh.  The data is organized by zip codes and, while covering all of Greenburgh, it also includes large parts of adjacent communities, including all of Scarsdale, and significant portions of White Plains, Valhalla and Sleepy Hollow.  The county data shows that for the 168,723 people in Greenburgh zips and adjacent communities, 7% have received the first dose only, 9% have received both doses, with 16% having received just one or both.   Within the zip codes, however, there are wide variations, ranging from 25% in Ardsley getting at least one shot down to 10% in the White Plains zips that include Greenburgh and Elmsford.

We can gain some further context and maybe insight by ranking the twelve zip codes by per capita income, age and race (measured here by % white according to the US Census).   Seeing that vaccination rates are lowest in zip codes where people of color form the majority is troubling, although median age may be something of a mitigating factor.
